The Shield Mindset
Students learn how to stay calm under pressure, regulate their reactions, and think clearly when things get hard — whether that’s in class, at school, or in everyday life.
The Architecture of Leadership
We don’t rely on random character words or motivational slogans.
Our leadership curriculum is structured with defined standards, progressive responsibility, and clear benchmarks for growth.
Students earn increasing responsibility as they demonstrate composure, discipline, and reliability.
The Pathway to Growth
Growth doesn’t happen by accident.
Our programs follow a progressive pathway that gives students real opportunities to practice leadership — leading drills, mentoring younger students, taking responsibility for their progress, and stepping up when challenges arise.
This is not an activity you attend.
It’s a path you walk.
A Clear Development Path
Growth doesn’t happen in a few weeks.
Our curriculum is intentionally structured as a progressive 36-month pathway — giving students the time, standards, and responsibility required to build real composure, leadership, and capability.
Belts and stripes mark technical progress.
Monthly leadership badges recognize character in action.
Leadership titles and responsibilities reflect earned trust.
This isn’t about quick belts or short-term motivation.
It’s about steady growth that holds up under pressure.

White Oak Martial Arts began serving Asheville families in 2000.
Over the past two decades, our leadership has trained instructors nationally, served on instructor testing boards, and helped shape curriculum at the highest levels of the martial arts industry — while continuing to operate and grow a school of our own for more than 26 years.
That experience brought clarity and conviction.
Today, White Oak stands fully independent — intentionally built around structured development, steady standards, and measurable growth.
Everything here reflects the best of what we’ve learned — refined, focused, and designed to serve Asheville families for the long term.
Parents don’t just see improvement in class. They see it at home. At school. In everyday life.
White Oak Martial Arts has made a profound positive impact on the lives of my son and I. We have been practicing there for 3.5 years and have earned our 1st degree black belts. During this time we have gained in skill, strength, confidence, and humility. These instructors are world-class in knowledge, skill, and heart.

Both of my kids went here for years! Master Croley is a fantastic teacher. My kids are 16 and 20 now and they gained self discipline, confidence, strength resilience and empathy from their years spent in this class. Cannot recommend them highly enough! Thank you!

All the most effective real-world fighting techniques and scenarios taught by the absolute expert Master Derek Croley. With his wealth of experience and background information, every class is an adventure. I have loved my journey at White Oak. Thank you Master Croley and Staff.

At White Oak, a Black Belt isn’t something you receive.
It’s something you become.
It represents a measurable transformation — earned through steady standards, demonstrated responsibility, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
Our Black Belt Leader Core is structured as a progressive 36-month pathway designed to develop not just skill, but composure, capability, and leadership that carries into real life.
Growth doesn’t stop there.
It begins there.
No prior experience is required. Our classes are suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced practitioners. Our instructors provide personalized guidance to help you progress at your own pace.
Absolutely. Classes are structured and professional.
Yes. You get in shape by training — not before.
For your first class, wear comfortable athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. If you decide to join us, we will provide you with the appropriate uniform. After that, most students attend classes twice each week.
That’s our specialty — confidence, focus, respect.
Every family begins with a complimentary two-part trial — a private lesson and a group class — so you can experience our structure firsthand.
If it feels like the right fit, most families begin with our 3-Month Starter Program.
The Starter Program is a true stepping stone into the full pathway — long enough to experience the standards and measurable growth we’re known for before choosing whether to continue into the 36-month Black Belt Leader Core.
Real growth takes time.
We also believe you should experience it before making a serious commitment.
Limited class sizes to keep learning personal.
With over 40 years of martial arts experience and more than two decades serving Asheville families, White Oak combines national-level expertise with local commitment.
Our instructors hold multiple Black Belts across systems, national certifications in martial arts instruction and women’s self-defense, and extensive experience teaching students of all ages.
We’ve built this school around safety, steady standards, and long-term development — not trends.
